14/11/2008Why are the traffic lights at Townend Street/Roche Way not operational yet?

It is now November, the clocks have gone back and it is dark. Lidl has opened and Townend Street is busier than usual. But the traffic lights at Townend Street/Roche Way are not operational yet?

So what is the excuse now that the lights are not switched on and will it be a yellow box junction included with the new traffic plans at this junction?

Billy

I think the reason is that the new lights won't be put into action without the proposed one way system.

There are now little posters on various lamp posts saying that the "traffic order" (which, in this case, means one way system and various parking, waiting and loading restrictions) will come into force on 12th January 2009.

You may or may not be aware that this will change how North Street, New Street, Main Street. The Cross and New Street can be used: traffic will be one way from North Street (outside Regal Court) to the junction of New Street and Townend Street.

Buses will no longer be able to travel up New Street into The Cross.

It remains to be seen how this will actually work in practice.
Thank you to Keep It Real for keeping us informed. Townend Street is busier with traffic since the new supermarket opened at the bottom of the road. There is also more walking around the area to get to and from it.

The fact that there was a road accident in the area which claimed a life and because it is now dark in the mornings and in the evenings mean we would like to see the traffic lights put into action before there is another accident or someone is killed crossing the road.

I think I need to wait a wee while and be more patient before we see the traffic lights operational.

Have your say:
