The Fastest Milk Boy In The West!

by Billy Long
  • The very smartly dressed Albert with Jean Carmichael.

Here is a picture of Albert Brookes who spent his full life delivering milk for Jimmy Hair ( a local dairy farmer) to nearly every doorstep at households throughout Dalry.

Albert was quick as a flash delivering milk and always had a cheery smile and said his hello's to everyone he passed by every single morning whatever the weather.

No doubt he looks still as fit as a fiddle as we caught him enjoying the Social Dalry events on Dalry Cross on the 8th of May 2010, and looking as if he is enjoying his retirement!.

I lived in Baidland Avenue up the Blair and bottled and delivered milk for Jimmy Hair before school and on Saturdays.

Albert was always so fit and it was almost impossible to keep up with him. He took me under his wings and showed me the ropes.

What a wonderful example Albert is to everyone. Loyal and hardworking.

I hope he enjoys a long and happy retirement.

My late dad (Cliff Long) used to drive the delivery truck for Jimmy Hair away back, and as a wee boy I used to go out and help him on Saturday Mornings in the 1970's. At that time Jimmy Hair was producing his own milk at his farm at South Lissens and Albert was working with him back then and probably since his school days delivering milk. That is how I got to know him. Doing the delivery meant that I got to know a lot of people in the town and got to know all the streets. It was very nice to meet up with wee Albert once again. There must have been many milk boys that were shown the ropes by Albert. What a character!

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
