Heathfield - North Street

by christine neil

Can anyone tell me the connection between the small tenement building in North Street, near the public park entrance and the name Heathfield, which is on the door to my flat on a large brass nameplate   In our back garden the bricks which form the pathway also have Heathfield on them.   I'm intrigued and not being a native of Dalry would love anyone's help to find out about it.  Thanks

The most likely source of these bricks would be the Heathfield Fireclay Works, which was in Lanarkshire.

See the following website and check under the letter H: http://www.penmorfa.com/bricks/scotland2.html

Do your bricks look like the one shown in the photo?  If so, then perhaps you have solved part of the mystery!

Also, this next website shows a map of where Heathfield Fireclay Works was located (it was to the south of Muirhead and west of Gartcosh):

The above was thanks to Google!

The brass nameplate is still a puzzle.  Perhaps somebody salvaged it from Heathfield Fireclay Works.  With there having been so many brickworks in the Dalry area in the past (eg. Pitcon, Kersland, Carsehead, Broadlie, Douglas), its just possible that an employee who was once at Heathfield got a job at one of the Dalry brickworks and took the brass nameplate along with them.

To find out when Heathfield closed, you would need to enquire with local historians in the North Lanarkshire area.

Hope this helps.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
